A place to call home
Meet Kerala.
Kerala is a state on India’s southwestern coast, between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. Its coastal towns, backwaters and hills form the landscape behind many of our families’ stories.
Malayalam is Kerala’s principal language. The word “Malayali” describes people connected to that language and culture. Kerala is home to communities of many faiths, whose histories are woven into its everyday life.

An ancient Christian heritage
The Saint Thomas
Christian story.
Many of Kerala’s Christian communities trace their origins, by tradition, to the ministry of the Apostle Thomas in the first century, often dated to AD 52. This is a cherished church tradition; the details of Christianity’s earliest beginnings in India remain a subject of historical study.
Over the centuries, Kerala’s Christians developed connections with churches in the Syriac-speaking world. Later encounters, reform movements and different relationships with wider church bodies helped shape the distinct traditions found in our fellowship today.
“Syrian” or “Syriac” in a church name usually points to this religious and liturgical heritage, rather than a congregation’s modern nationality.
